Daily News Podcasts.

With the current state of affairs in the United States right now, it can be difficult to keep up with all the news. There seem to be complicated stories coming out almost every day and understanding everything about a story can be overwhelming. Plus, spending an extended amount of time listening or engaging with the news can sometimes be exhausting and difficult.

However, there are ways to keep up with some news stories without feeling inundated. Several news companies have been producing daily news podcasts with some of the most important news of the day or week. These shows by no means cover every news story but do provide some understanding and context to some of the most important stories happening. If you need a show to listen to on your commute, over breakfast, or getting ready for the day, here are some great news related podcasts in no particular order:

The Daily from The New York Times

Hosted by political journalist Michael Barbaro, The Daily is a news related podcast that’s released every weekday. Each episode covers one relevant news story, has a few quick headlines of other stories, and is usually 20-30 minutes long. This show is great to listen to daily but it’s especially helpful if there are specific stories you need more information or context on, as it does primarily focus on one story each episode.

NPR’s Up First

This is by far my own favorite news related podcast to listen to. Released every weekday like The Daily, Up First is usually 12-15 minutes long and covers 3-4 of the major headlines of the day. On occasion, there are special episodes released of important breaking stories. The show is hosted by David Greene, Rachel Martin, and Steve Inskeep, who all also work on NPR’s Morning Edition. If you need something quick to start your day and like NPR programming, this is definitely the news related podcast for you.

Full disclosure: I actually haven’t had the chance to listen to the following two podcasts but they are other news podcasts you can find wherever you get your podcasts.

ABC News: Start Here

Start Here is hosted by Brad Mielke and produced by ABC News. Like the other shows, it’s released every weekday and is usually 20-25 minutes long.

Slate: What Next

What Next is a news podcast from Slate and is the newest podcast on this list. Started in the fall of 2018, episodes from this show usually run for 15-25 minutes long and like The Daily, will primarily focus on one news story you need to know in each episode.

These news podcasts aren’t the only ones out there that do daily weekday episodes covering the news and they’re not going to be able to cover all the news in an in-depth and comprehensive way. But these shows do offer a starting point for the day and a better understanding of unquestionably important news stories. If you are looking for a news podcast to start each day with, these shows might be a good place to start. Listening to all of them every single day might be overwhelming but finding the show you like the most and potentially listening to individual episodes from the others can help you better understand what is happening in the world today.
